Tomorrow’s the day! Sa wakas! After… ah… just a few weeks lang naman, it’s PBA season nanaman! Wait, before that, let’s take a look back at last season. Baka sakaling may na-miss tayo. Siguro it’s better if chronological yung recap natin tipong in particular orderrrrrr (in Loonie’s way ng paged-deliver).
The 43rd season started on December 17, 2017 and ended on December 19, 2018. Grabe yung haba nung season ah.
Preseason, late 2017 events…
(September 2017)
*On September 20 after 18 seasons playing in the PBA, Alaska Aces’ veteran bigman Anthony “Tony” Dela Cruz retired.
(October 2017)
*Coach Alex Vanguardia of Phoenix Fuel Masters resigned as their coach. He was replaced by former Alaska Aces’ assistant coach Louie Alas on October 26, 2017.
*October 29, 2017, Coach Pido Jarencio superseded the ‘On Leave’ Franz Pumaren for the NorthPort Batang Pier (then Globalport Batang Pier).
*The 2017 PBA Draft was held on October 29 and that’s where uhm… Bakit? Well a lot of big names filed for the draft. Kaso… on October 27 something happened… a ‘controversial’ trade that sent the top draft pick (Christian Standhardinger) na dapat para sa Kia Picanto (now Columbian Dyip) sa ‘league strongest’ San Miguel Beermen was approved by then Commissioner Chito Narvasa. C-Stan!!!
Well we all know what happened there. Di lang ako ang nainis, fans and pati na rin mga team governors and team owners like Mr. Dioceldo Sy of the Blackwater and Alaska’s Mr. Wilfred Steven Uytengsu. Medyo nagkagulo yung buong liga dahil dun. May mga meetings here and there, press conferences, mga issues na biglang naglabasan, etcetera.
So ayun, surprisingly SMB still didn’t get that long-awaited grandslam tapos na-injure pa si JMF (later part na nung season yun). Tapusin na natin yung dun. Last na to about that, pero promise parang di na mabubura sa isip ko yun. In all fairness din naman sa SMB, ganun talaga e, to reach higher grounds you need to be stronger and the management’s job is to make a strong team. Siguro Feeling ko overpowered na yung SMB that time.
Anyway some of the notable names drafted were Kiefer Ravena, Raymar Jose, Jason Perkins, Jeron Teng, Robbie Herndon, Rey Nambatac, Jett Manuel and Devon Potts.
*On October 30, 2017, Jayjay Helterbrand officially announced his retirement after playing 17 seasons in the PBA. Lahat ng yun sa Barangay Ginebra San Miguel franchise.
(November 2017)
*Senator Manny Pacquiao’s contract ended and was formally replaced by then assistant coach Chris Gavina as Kia Picanto’s head coach on November 4, 2017.
*On November 27, the Star Hotshots changed their name to Magnolia Hotshots. The team's new logo debuted during the team's press launching.
(December 2017)
*Before the start of the All-Filipino Cup (December 11), The NLEX Road Warriors adopted a new logo and that debuted during the team's press launching.
Came Philippine Cup (December 17, 2017-April 6, 2018)…
*December 17, PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa officially tendered his resignation but the Board of Governors has advised him to remain as commissioner until December 31 to have a smooth transition to his eventual successor. The board also named Media Bureau chief Willie Marcial as the league's officer-in-charge.
*Surprisingly (sorry sarcastic) Coach Chris Gavina resigned at the end of the All-Filipino Cup (December 30). He was later replaced by then assistant coach Ricky Dandan.
(January 2018)
*January 25, the PBA Board of Governors official appointed officer-in-charge Willie Marcial as the tenth commissioner of the league.
(March 2018)
*Another shocker came on March 27, the lifetime ban on Renaldo Balkman was lifted. The lifetime ban was imposed by former commissioner Chito Salud on March 13, 2013 due to an incident involving his former teammate Arwind Santos when Balkman grabbed Santos by the neck in the final minutes of their game against Alaska on March 8, 2013.
(April 2018)
Commissioner’s Cup (April 22-August 8, 2018)…
*April 3, the Kia Picanto changed their name to Columbian Dyip. The team's new logo and uniforms will debut at the opening day of the Commissioner's Cup on April 22.
*After an unsuccessful All-Filipino Cup the Blackwater Elite decided to part ways with their long-time head coach Leo Isaac. Coach Bong Ramos took over as HC last April 30.
(June 2018)
*Johnedel Cardel took head coaching duties for the now Columbian Dyip after coach Ricky Dandan resigned on June 26.
(August 2018)
Governors’ Cup (August 17-December 19, 2019)…
*The GlobalPort Batang Pier changed their name to NorthPort Batang Pier on August 10. The team presented their new logo through their social media accounts.
Tapos… tapos na pala. Halos bukas na pala, started late so I didn’t have that much time to edit. Hopefully I can focus on this tomorrow, add some pictures and check for wrong spelling and grammar. Napasarap kasi sa pagbabasa ng manga. Sorry guys. I hope you read this. If I missed something or may gusto lang kayong i-add sa mga nandito feel free to leave a comment on the blog, sa Facebook or sa Twitter o kaya i-message niyo na lang yung page.
I also intentionally didn’t add the big trades that happen last season kasi ire-review ko din yung last season per team.
